STRIP MINE PROJECT MOVING FORWARD
The owner of the property, Don Sakaida and his small company, Sakaida & Sons, is moving forward trying to get the mining project on Kagel Mountain in Sylmar approved. This small company hopes to win approval to mine our mountain and profit from selling the aggregate. Sakaida & Sons have hired a PR person and a consulting company to try and win approval.
Strip Mine Planned for the Northern San Fernando Valley
* 73 acre site
* 3,000,000 cubic yards of earth will be stripped from the mountain
* 7 - 14 years of operation
* 230 dump truck trips per day on Maclay & Hubbard Streets
* Operating daily from 7AM to 5PM, up to 3,000 hours per year

About CASM - Because of the huge impact a strip mine will have on all of us, concerned SFV residents have come together with the intention of saving the San Fernando Valley’s mountains from being mined. We have formed a group called “CASM-SFV” which is Citizens Against Strip Mining in the San Fernando Valley.
